"What are men to rocks and mountains?"- Jane Austen
Dearest reader,
Reminiscing about a trip to NYC a few years back, I discovered this edition while perusing the New York Public Library Shop. I'm quite desperate to go back again when things return to the new normal, but for now, brown parcels will suffice.
Just look at how beautiful this edition of Pride and Prejudice from Chronicle Books is! It comes filled with 19 copies of handwritten letters from the novel- all made to look and feel as they would in Regency England. My favorite part is how the letters come folded since envelopes were not in common use at the time. It is so nice to unfold them and then fold them back up again.
One of my favorite quotes in the novel is Lizzy's exclamation of, "What are men to rocks and mountains?" when invited to travel the Lake District with her aunt and uncle. For me, it speaks to Lizzy's tiredness and frustration with the insipidity of the society surrounding her. She's excited to revel in the beauty of the natural world.
This quote is the inspiration for all of my mountain jewelry, but most especially this necklace. When worn close to the heart, it serves as a reminder to step back from the pressures of daily life and take a moment to savor the beauty that the natural world has to offer.
Sincerely,
Emilie
